Some friends of mine are putting on an exhibition very soon. So soon that it will occur on various dates during February 2024. If you are in the north of England, this might be of interest to you.
Here is their press release…
RECOLLECTIONS EXHIBITION.
The act of, and power in, remembering.

Using the medium of 35mm and 120 film, the North of England based artists and photographers will join together to explore the importance of memories, the weight of being remembered, and the ability to form connections in modern times.
SHOP Preston will play host to a collaborative photography exhibition by three female photographers/artists across the three weekends of 10th-11th, 17th-18th and 24th-25th February 2024. The collective will debut their exhibitions which individually explore the theme “Recollections”.
As well as the collective debuting their exhibitions which individually explore the theme “Recollections”, across the three weekends they will also host an invite only opening event with a performance by The Dissonance Collective, photography walk supported by ILFORD and create your own Cyanotype workshops with Little Vintage Photography.
Charlotte Parkin presents “FØROYAR”
West Yorkshire based photographer, Charlotte Parkin is a member of Aire Street Darkroom and uses both 35mm and medium format film in her practice. Predominantly capturing landscapes (urban and natural), she explores the influence of both social and industrial development on the land around her home and further afield. This year she will be turning her hand to something new and exploring alternative processes.

“FØROYAR” recollects Charlottes trip to the Faroe Islands in 2022, her first trip planned with the purpose of capturing the landscape using a Canon A-1 (28 mm f/2.8 lens), Bronica ETRSI. (40mm f/4 lens), and ILFORD HP5 in both medium and 35mm formats. Representing the greater proportion of her own photographic practice, the exhibition draws into focus the principles of the darkroom. Notes, test strips and contact sheets form a physical reminder of the decisions made and processes undertaken by Charlotte to produce some of the final images displayed.

stiffpigeons presents “TRI/TRY”
Tri:Three. Try: make an attempt or effort to do something.
During the first COVID lockdown stiffpigeons were convinced to pick up a film camera again after 20 years. She got a random Zenit 11 off eBay for less than a fiver and immediately fell back in love. Originally from Southeast London, she moved to Manchester in 2021 and found it a great way to make connections.

Tri/Try is made up of three shots on three different films, showing three different sides of nine hand selected subjects by someone with imposter syndrome trying their hand at film photography. The individuals included are a selection of those who have helped create lasting recollections. Taken on a Zenit 11 and a Pentax ME Super, using a range of films from ILFORD, Candido, Kodak and Lomography. These images are her love letters to the individuals included, who are just a small selection of those who have helped create lasting recollections.

Susie Jones presents “Where the Crow Flies”
Lancashire based artist and songwriter Susie Jones strives to always explore new ways to tell her stories and form connections to the world around us through her work. Having been gifted an Olympus OM30 by a family member, she found the joy and risk in film photography compelling. The camera quickly became a firm friend accompanying her on her travels and a useful tool in exploring how images can connect us with places, people and perspectives, as well as returning to those times through memories. “Where the crow flies”, taken on Canon T70 using Kentmere and APX, will be the first public exhibition of her photographs.

Coming from the same birthplace as the Industrial Revolution, Susie sees shapes of home in the most unexpected of places. Ideas are carried on the wings of hope and distilled in the waters of where they land, with their unique histories and applications. Leaving behind a relic that is connected, indistinguishable and yet remote and unrelatable. Just like a photograph.

More information about the exhibition and tie in events can be found on the Recollections exhibition Instagram account.
I should be able to visit on one of the days, but I will miss their photowalk which is planned in conjunction with Ilford. You can find details for that on Eventbrite.
Good luck to all of you 🙂
