Big Film Photowalk 2025 – Wakefield !!!

Welcome to the Biggest Concurrent UK Film Photowalk of 2025! Organised by Analogue Wonderland.

With multiple locations around the country, the plan is that everyone will be within a reasonable distance from a photowalk that suits them. You can read about last year’s successful inaugural event here: What Went Down At Big Film Photowalk 24

You can find more details of the walk on 28th June on the AW website. Here are some more details of the Wakefield section of the walk.

Details of the Wakefield Photowalk
The Wakefield photowalk will start at the Cenotaph in Coronation Gardens. It is midway between the bus station and Westgate Train Station. There is another train station in Wakefield which is on the route, but a little further away from the starting point, so try to arrive at Westgate station if you are arriving by train.

From there, we will head to the Old Town Hall via the new one. It is down some nice little streets with interesting history. It is set in a little square with lovely views of the clock tower.

We will pass through the alleyway, heading toward The Black Rock, a Grade II listed building opened in 1842. This route will lead us to the cathedral with its 900-year-old history.

After a short stay at the cathedral, we will head to another ‘church’, Chantry Bridge. It is one of only 3 surviving bridge chapels in the country. The bridge is open on a Saturday, but only between 11am-1pm, so we might catch it if we are lucky.

Across the busy road, you will already see The Hepworth Gallery. People with a WF1 postcode can get in for free, but everyone else will have to pay £13. It will be your choice if you want to stay and peruse. There is a lovely garden area that is free to explore and a great photographic location.

From here we have a choice, we can take a bus or walk to Sandal Castle. It is about 2km away and is the origin of the Grand Old Duke of York nursery rhyme. If you want to skip this part, you can head back into Wakefield city centre and end the walk. If you want to extend the day even further, you can wander Pugneys Country Park, which is behind the castle, but I will be heading back to the city after the castle.

And if you are still thinking WHY WAKEFIELD?? Have a look at these videos…you could even make it a whole weekend visit 😉

Well, there we are then…why go to the regular touristy places? Come to the home of Jane McDonald.

And if that isn’t enough videos for you, what about this lovely little ditty.

More about the Film Development and Competition
Be sure to finish at least one of the Kodak films you received as part of your entrance fee, as there is a competition, judged by AW partners. It will be for the best film photo taken on the day, with a chance to win AW goodies. Organised in partnership with Kodak and Pentax. The development and scanning included in the ticket price only applies if you hand a roll of film back to your Photowalk leader at the end of the event. More details of this can be found on the AW website.

See you there, bring your best Wakefield accent, there might be a prize on the day if you do!
