Stuff I’ve Read – Unreasonable Behaviour

I just finished this book – Don McCullin “Unreasonable Behaviour”.

I have to say it is one of the best photography biographies I have read. Much better and shorter than Frank’s. Though I have to say I was a little disappointed by the number of photos inside. There are enough, but it makes you want to see more. I had intended to see more of his work at an exhibition in Liverpool. Unfortunately the current Covid situation put paid to that. It was the reason I bought the book in the first place.

There is a documentary about him on Youtube and Amazon Prime. Here is a preview. I am really tempted to rent it.

There is also an updated book, which has a different final chapter. You can read a review of that here.

Plus I recently read that Angelina Jolie will be directing a movie based on this book. I am really looking forward to that.

It is an easy read, written very lucidly. The chapter on the Biafra war was heartbreaking. The book doesn’t try to be more than what it is, a story of someones extraordinary life. What I got most from the book was that he was well aware of his role as a war photographer and he was not comfortable with it. He didn’t make himself out to be a hero or play up his role. If you are looking for a book to read about a war photographer, this is a great one to dive into.
